Thankfully not! We take lots of precautions when working with chemicals. So for example we all wear a labcoat and gloves and safety goggles in the lab, whether we’re working with dangerous things or completely safe things. But if we’re working with dangerous things we work in pairs, with someone on the end of the telephone if something goes wrong. We also have gas masks (called respirators) just in case.
If we’re working outside, we have a big chemical safety suit we wear, rubber boots and big rubber gloves, as well as the respirator.
Back in the day things weren’t so safe! The place I work has been around 100 years and there were definitely historic cases, for example during the world wars, of experiments going wrong. They also tested hallucinogenic drugs, like LSD, on the soldiers back then (theres even a video on YouTube)! We would never dream of doing that now!
