The science around fibre optics is just like the science around everything: at first it looks terrifying and you don’t think you’ll ever understand what’s going on, and then you talk to people a bit and learn a bit about it and then feel like you kind of understand it now, and then you’re talking to someone and they use a word you don’t recognise and then you ask them about it, and you realise that if you look more closely you don’t really understand at all, and its terrifying again, and then you talk to some other people about it and learn some more and then you feel like you kind of understand it again, and then another word that you don’t recognise, and so on and so on. Sometimes that gets a bit annoying, but most of the time its fun to think that you could keep learning about the world for the rest of your life and still have things to learn.
