  good question – i have no idea. but if i was to guess i’d say a distant relative of the chicken came first which did not lay eggs and a mutation occurred and it started to lay them. This was advantageous and more bird like animals appeared. Charles Darwin describes it well in his theory of evolution. what do you think came first?

i think the chicken came first because, without the chicken there cant be an egg because a chicken lays an egg.
